Description

This finished piece is drawn as a submission to :iconqualitysonicart:'s Sonic and the Black Knight contest, whereby a character that was not previously featured in the game had to be drawn the way they would look in the time of King Arthur's Court. Of course, I chose my character avatar, Guardian Josh the Hedgehog, to be prominently featured in this piece, giving him a new Knight outfit and adding several other details like a sword, armor and various medieval designs.

In this stylized medival world, his name is Sir Joseph the Guardian, and he was born and raised on the plains of somewhere around ancient Scotland. His title is clarified as a rogue knight- meaning, he has no alliance but is a wanderer, helping out commonfolk wherever and whenever he decides to. He doesn't really have an affiliation to the Knights of King Arthur, but occasionally he will help them out in times of dire need. Sir Joseph mostly does whatever he needs to survive... even taking unchivalrous practices such as banditry on occasion.

Sir Joseph is accompanied on his travels by fascinating creatures known only as the Will 'o the Wisps. These mysterious blue figures from European legends past revealed themselves to him when he was but a child, teaching their ways and language to him. To this day, they serve and protect him in his quest for survival. Contrary to what the folklore proclaims, Sir Joseph finds the Wisps quite friendly, and sometimes rather talkative.
Little is known about these elusive travellers, and legends and tales spread across the kingdoms lead the townspeople to start referring to Sir Joseph's band as: The Guardians of Camelot.

Well. I daresay this is the most ellaborate piece I have ever worked on. The background, characters and scenery are all completely hand-drawn, save for a little technomagic to touch up a few things. The colors blend quite well together, and the facial expression is probably the most interesting one I've drawn yet. For the costume of Josh, I tried to stay as true to the original as possible, while adding a bit of medieval flair to everything, including even his scarf. Of course, the Wisps are taken straight from Sonic Colors, but knowing in detail the legend of the Will 'O the Wisp, I thought it was too good an oppurtunity to pass up. (yes, I do know different wisps appear in Sonic and the Black Knight as obstacles, but I couldn't really characterize them, now could I?)

Now, for the background, I tried something I've never really tried before and put in a grassy forest, topped with an early sun rising in the distant sky. I also put a little castle, but it's far, far away, to emphasize Sir Joseph's complete detachment to Lords and Kingdoms and the like.
Well, please enjoy my handiwork, and remember- You can be a Knight of the Wind as long as you Open Your Heart!

The idea for this piece is pretty cute <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/> and although you were mainly following the rules of the contest while drawing this, I gave you 4 stars at originality, because I like the way you made the character outfit perfectly fit the historical/fantasy setting. 3 stars and a half at vision, because there are some colors which do not look very good if you put them so close to each other (like, brown, orange and that particular kind of green). 3 stars and a half at impact too, as it looks good if you watch it as a whole, the parts are well balanced and the composition is perfect xD only 3 stars at techique because it still needs lots of work to improve. You should try to make the colors look way smoother by coloring slowly, without leaving any white spaces. Moreover, the digital corrections are too noticeable: you should try with a smaller brush, using colors identical to the original ones while intervening digitally. Hope this helps xD and sorry about my terrible english!^^
